in rhode island. it will be ten years next month. that's when 100 people were killed. attorney john barlick represented families. he wrote a book called "killer show." it details that devastating fire, its causes and the heart breaking aftermath. john joins me now from providence, rhode island. we were talking a couple of months ago here at cnn about this book of yours and i immediately, when i saw the news out of brazil, i thought of you, rhode island, the pyrotechnics, the foam you brought in to show us how highly flammable it was. there were many similarities, were there not? >> hello, brooke, yes. this is like a recurrent nightmare. there were many parallel facts, at least as brazil's situation has been reported. >> run through a couple of them. what else? what else was similar? >> well, according to initial reports we have improper use of pyrotechnics in an unsuitable venue, we have flammable wall coverings, we have gross overcrowding as we had at the station. and we have staff that seems woefully undertrained to deal with emergencies. >> i read your opinion piece on cnn.com and you wr

hometown. let's bring in john berman in new york, so what will be the mayor's political legacy you think? >> carol i don't think you can overstate his political legacy. for more than ten years ed koch was synonymous with new york. new york city was teetering on the brink of bankruptcy and by sheer force of will and a pr salesman, ed koch really lifted new york out from the doldrums and in a statement today the current mayor michael bloomberg said new york city lost an irrepressable icon our most charismatic lecheerleader and champion. ed koch has been out of office for more than 20 years but still had tremendous, tremendous reach in this city. his political ideology changed over the years. he was a four-term congressman before he was mayor, a liberal, a real liberal in new york city, then he shifted to the right over his time as the mayor, and then in 2004 he actually endorsed george w. bush for the presidency. he was controversial at times, a lot of heated racial conflict in new york city in his time as mayor but when you think back at the legacy which was your original question it was

at the desk with joe johns. even after congresswoman giffords was shot, there was still no appetite for any gun control in congress. not just among republicans but among many key democrats. what do you see actually happening, if anything, after this newtown shooting just 47 days ago? >> background checks is something that a lot of people are saying they can certainly beef up especially as it relates to people who have mental health problems. they've been talking about that for more than a decade. clearly more needs to be done. so many times when you see one of these mass shootings, there's a mental health element involved. there's another thing. the nra says you just need to enforce the rules that are already in place. there's one place where there is a gap. that is in the issue of gun trafficking. there's not a federal gun trafficking statute. a lot of people are saying perhaps we can work on things along those lines. again, as dana says, a lot of other people said an assault weapons ban another one very hard to do. the way this congress is configured. >> for private gun sellers, there are

supper club in southgate, kentucky, killed 165 people. among 2,400 waiting for entertainer john davidson to perform, which believed to be an electrical fire went undetected at first. no fire detectives or sprinklers, at the time they weren't required. the deadliest nightclub blaze happened in 1942 at the coconut grove club in boston. 492 people were killed. the cause of the blaze, to this day, remains unknown. we don't know all the details about what happened in brazil yet, of course. however, whenever and wherever this kind of disaster occurs, investigators will be looking at fire codes, for example. what kind were in place and were they enforced? in the u.s., for example, there is no national safety code. that's left up to individual states or counties and cities to set up and follow. now, among the things authorities will examine, was the club overcrowded? it seems that it was. were there smoke detectives? a sprinkler system and well-marked exits? miguel? >> so terrible. our hearts go out to the folks in brazil at the moment. thank you very much. >>> that arctic blast isn't over yet.

, you even heard them over the weekend. john mccain himself said it was a wake-up call. that's why i'm told that lindsey graham, the senator from south carolina, who has kind of been in and out of putting comprehensive immigration reform, gone on the phone right after the election with democrat chuck schumer and said let's revive our bipartisan talks. they had a meeting shortly thereafter in november and then they've had a total i'm told five meetings since then. the last one was last wednesday. ands that when they decided to go ahead with this. and chuck schumer actually called the president last night to say that we're going to push this. you mentioned 2007. one thing that i'm going to be fascinated by is i was actually sitting in the same exact room that they're going to be in today back in 2007 when they had this big bipartisan event, ted kennedy was there, john mccain was there. of course, that went south big time. it will be sbvery interesting t see how they refer to that and see how different things are, particularly are republicans. >> i want to bring in brianna keilar at the

on the right. republicans really got absolutely crushed by gop primary voters. case in point was john mccain, standing right behind ted kennedy during that press conference. how did this come to pass? the november elections. we saw the numbers. it has been talked about and talked about since then, the fact that latino voters have been going up as a percentage of the electorate and republicans got fewer than they have in three presidential elections. so it was a real wake-up call we're told, particularly to republicans like john mccain and lindsey graham of south carolina, who had kind of been working on comprehensive immigration reform on and off again. lindsey graham called chuck schumer. they had the first of five meetings. some were after the election. and they set in motion this process, a timetable to have principles now, the end of january, legislative language in march and they hope to have some kind of vote in the senate before the august recess. >> let's talk about the timing of this announcement here. the president was -- he's going to go to vegas tomorrow and is supposed to ou

correspondent joe johns. we're going to talk about the debate. first i want to talk about the moment when we saw gabrielle giffords. this really, in some ways, is a game changer. everybody pays attention. everybody watches no matter how you feel about the gun debate, clearly that was the moment of the morning. >> there is no question about it. for members of the senate to look at one of their own, a fellow former member of congress speaking so haltingly and trying so hard to get out the few sentences that she had. more importantly to make the point she wanted to make which is even though she's a gun owner and supporter she thinks safety needs to come first. along those lines of emotion, there definitely was a moment that her husband had later in the hearing about the issue and about the shooting that took place that killed six people. he was trying to make the argument for limiting those high capacity rounds. he talkeded about the fact that jared loughner, the shooter, his gun effectively jammed and what would have been if rounds had been limited. >> icon tend if the same thing happened when he
